Mabbisu Dance - Pangkep Culture Exploration

Mabissu is a custom show which has a dance and any extreme
attractions.Mabissu dance comes from Segeri, pangkajene kepulauan or usually called
Pangkep, south Sulawesi. So,for everybody who is looking for an art show,Mabissu
could be a good choice to be chosen.

Ma’bissu dance is always held in Pangkep regency every harvest season
is coming,it is approximate on February to March. This dance is done by six
dancer, named “Bissu”.Actually, the word “Bissu” is taken from the word “bessi”
which means clean, pure, and strong.Indeed, when this dance is shown, all these
Bissu do some unusual attractions, means that in dancing this dance there is a
great strength is showed by them.Whereas, the word “Mabissu” means doing
Bissu dance.

Before Mabbissu, the Bissu dancer do a ritual because they afraid to God and Goddes . After that, the Bissu dance are going to apply Mabbissu. Before doing some extreme attractions, the first thing that is done by these
Bissu is dancing followed with the music.Uniquely, when they are dancing ,they
dressed up like a woman. They wear golden costume and a dagger that is infixed
on their waist each.Dagger is one of traditional weapons is in Indonesia, formed
sharp and pointed. All these Bissu is going to dance followed with the drum
music,it is a special music solely for Bissu dance. Moreover, when these Bissu are
dancing ,there is an incantation in torilangi language is said by them.Torilangi is
an old language from Bugis. These Bissu dance by surrounding a holy thing. This
holy thing is sure of them as a place for their forefather. This holy thing is
named “Arajangnge”.

“Ajjarengnge” was given any traditional cakes, fruits, chickens, buffalo’s and
cow’s head.After a minute,drum music is going to pitch faster.However,when
the pitch of the drum music is faster then the movement of Bissu dance become
slower,It Is a sign that all these Bissu were penetrated by the souls of the
dead, this is named as a trance stage.

The local society believe that when those Bissu is in trance, their body was
penetrated by the soul of the forefather ,so they are dancing unconsciously. The
local society also believe that there is a weak and a strong soul of the forefather,it
means when a Bissu is penetrated by a strong soul then it’s gonna be good
but on the other hand,if he is penetrated by a weak soul then the Bissu will be
unfortunate.Besides dancing unconsciously, all these Bissu is beginning to show
a great and even unbelievable attractions, named “Maggiri”.When “Maggiri” is
being shown, this is a situation where the audience just realize that why those
dancer is called “bissu” which means strong and supernatural.

“maggiri” is the top stage of Mabissu dance. This is the time where the
audience is beginning scare to see all these Bissu doing their attractions. In these
attractions, those Bissu take the dagger is on the waist and then use it to stab their
neck (throat),hands, and stomach. These Bissu do this attractions on purpose to
test the strength of the soul penetrated in their body.

If these Bissu are not injured then it means that the soul penetrated in their
body is a strong and supernatural soul. This soul is believed that it can make them
lucky. But,if the dagger makes these Bissu to be injured then the soul is weak or
there is no soul penetrated their body.Another factors which can cause these
Bissu to be injured is they don’t fulfill one of the requirement of Mabissu dance. The equipment to Mabbissu are Dagger, Alisu, Anak Bencing, Bencing, Oiye, Bendera Arajang, and Teddung Arajang.

So,the conclution is Mabissu is a very appealing dance,it’s a so different
dance and I ensure you won’t find the dance which is good and appealing like this
in the world.
